Understand your current rating first
Before spending money on improvements, commission a new EPC assessment if your current certificate is more than a couple of years old, or if works have been carried out since it was issued. Your assessor will produce a recommendation report alongside the certificate: this is your roadmap.
Insulation improvements
Insulation is typically the highest-impact, most cost-effective improvement. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and solid wall insulation (internal or external) all contribute significantly to EPC ratings. Heating system upgrades
Replacing an old, inefficient boiler with a modern condensing boiler or heat pump improves the heating efficiency score significantly. Even improving the controls (adding thermostatic radiator valves, programmers, and zone controls) can move the rating.
Lighting upgrades
Switching to LED lighting is one of the quickest wins. Modern LED systems use 60–70% less energy than fluorescent equivalents and are recognised in the EPC methodology.
Glazing and air tightness
Upgrading single glazing to double or triple glazing improves the fabric efficiency score. Addressing draughts and improving air tightness through sealing measures also contributes.
Renewable energy
Installing solar PV panels can improve an EPC rating directly by reducing the building’s net energy demand. The contribution depends on system size and the building’s total energy use.
